Paper Flowers

Caroline's birthday party is on Saturday.  It's a luau party; leis, pineapple, fruit smoothies and all.   Because in the middle of January, especially on a day when the high temperature isn't even supposed to reach 30 degrees, you need a little tropical escape.  Of course, after hosting a slumber party, I'm going to need an escape.  Come Sunday afternoon, I probably won't even care where I escape to, just as long as I have a moment to collect myself and down a few pina coladas.

Back in June I bought some luau decorations at the dollar store.  My mother teased me mercilessly, but that's okay, I'm used to it.  Despite the hit to my self esteem (ha!), picking up the luau decorations seven months in advance really proved to be a prudent thing to do.  Have you ever tried to find luau decorations in January?  Honestly, I'm sure it's *possible*, but I didn't even have to try to locate any because I used my wits and thought ahead.  Thinking ahead saved me a headache or two and also the potential for Caroline to resort to having a princess or Dora party instead.  You can find princess and Dora stuff all year round.  However, to a soon-to-be-nine-year-old-non-girly-girl, either a princess or Dora themed party would be tragic.

You can laugh all you want, but I think I've proven that sometimes being neurotic can be a good thing.

Sometimes.

In preparation for the big party, we practiced making tissue paper flowers last night.

I like to do some sort of crafty project to keep the girls entertained.

I know I mentioned earlier that we'll be painting initial letters, but I thought it would be fun to have two  projects.

The flowers turned out pretty cute.  I didn't pay a super amount of attention to every detail, so they're not perfect, but they are still colorful and fun.

I think the girls will have fun making them, too.

I am very impressed at these flowers! When we were kids we made flowers out of Kleenex, which were quite hideous, but extra absorbent.
Eat a cupcake for Grandma!

Ha! Extra absorbent! That made me laugh.

Making the flowers was pretty easy, but there were tissue paper pieces urreywhere. Also, it's very hard to cut perfect squares out of tissue paper. Well, it's not *hard* I'm just not patient enough to do it properly.

I haven't made skool cupcakes yet because it's supposed to snow tonight. It's only going to be an inch or so, but with snow, there is always a possibility of a delay in the morning or a cancellation. I don't want to be stuck with 30 cupcakes and no school. So, I have to wake up extra early tomorrow and check the school report and if skool is delayed, I'll make the cupcakes in the morning.
